Description
White Hall is a house dated 1658, as indicated by a plaque on the south elevation, with extensions and additions made around 1780 and 1848. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a plastered brick plinth and brick infill, topped with a hipped plain tiled roof. Originally constructed in the 17th century, it has a square plan formed by a rebuilt L-plan, with a kitchen extension added to the north around 1780 and a second storey added around 1848.
The east elevation is symmetrical with three bays, showcasing an 18th-century panelled door, a patterned rectangular fanlight with a shallow hood, and two ground floor twenty-paned flush-framed hung sash windows with panelled shutters. The first floor has two sixteen-paned hung sash windows with a central casement window, while the second floor features two similar windows with twelve panes. The south elevation includes two bay windows from the early and late 19th century.
Inside, the house contains 18th-century doors and doorcases, a staircase with turned balusters, some plastered cornices, and boxed ceiling beams. The Wedd family, who were dissenters and educators, owned the property from 1780 to 1848 and operated a school in the barn to the west, as well as building the chapel. The property was sold around 1848 to Mr. Stockbridge, a miller.
