Description

Cooling's Barn is a converted barn that includes an adjoining cottage, dating from the mid-17th century and 18th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building features slatestone rubble walls and a slate roof that is hipped to the left and gabled at the front wing. A stone rubble gable end stack with dripcourses is present. The original layout seems to have been a one-room cottage with a fireplace on the front end wall and newel stairs projecting from the side wall. An 18th-century threshing barn was added at right angles behind the original structure.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an L-shaped front, with the barn forming the main range and a lean-to along the front. There are small window openings with late 20th-century two-light casements without glazing bars on the cottage wing at the right-hand end. The doorway to the barn is located to the right of centre, and there is an entrance to the cottage through the right-hand end of the lean-to. The outer side wall of the cottage features a rectangular stair projection.

Inside, the cottage retains its original fireplace with a slate slab lintel and a stone newel staircase. The original roof truss remains, consisting of straight principals with a morticed apex, holes for threaded purlins, and a very small collar set high up that is halved and dovetailed on, along with evidence of a similar cut-off collar lower down. The trusses appear to have been reused, as they have regularly spaced peg holes along them.
