Description
A pair of houses, originally likely a single dwelling, dates to around the mid-17th century and was extended in the 18th century, with alterations made around the early 20th century. The walls are colour-washed stone rubble, and the roof is thatched with a hipped form. A brick stack sits on the end wall of The Thatches, while an axial stack is positioned between the two houses.
The original house had an L-shaped plan. The Thatches retains a two-room layout; the room to the left originally contained a hearth, and the right-hand room appears to have been a workshop, converted in the late 19th or early 20th century. Coolings Farmhouse extends from the left end as a two-room wing.
The front of The Thatches presents an asymmetrical appearance with four windows, mostly 20th-century casements. A late 19th or early 20th-century six-pane sash window is present on the first floor to the left of centre, and a 20th-century panelled and glazed door is located to the right. A 19th-century lean-to projects from the left-hand end of the Thatches, with a 20th-century glazed porch in front. The wing forming Coolings Farmhouse has two late 20th-century single-pane casements to the left of the lean-to, and its entrance is through an early 20th-century outshut on its rear wall.
Inside The Thatches, the left-hand room features ovolo-moulded ceiling beams, and there is a timber winder staircase at the rear.
