Description
Cardinal's Yard is a cottage located in Shudy Camps, dating from the early 18th century. It features a north-south range with a 1976 addition on the south side. The cottage is timber framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof that has a red brick ridge stack positioned south of the center. The original range is one storey high, while the addition includes one storey and an attic, with the main entrance situated at the angle between the two sections. A notable feature is the fine carved door, which may date back to the 17th century and is thought to be of Spanish origin. The cottage has two eyebrow casement dormer windows and three 20th-century windows, one of which is a segmental planned window in the single storey range. Inside, there are remnants of trusses from an earlier timber frame that was on the site, along with evidence of a framed chimney stack that has been rebuilt using early 19th-century red brick. Part of the west wall has been removed to accommodate a flat-roofed extension. The cottage is included in the register for its group value only.
