Description

White Chimneys is a cottage dating from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It is timber-framed and has rendered plaster walls, covered by a long, thatched roof with two ridges and eaves levels. The east end of the roof is hipped, and a mid-17th century brick ridge stack rises diagonally from a square base. The cottage originally comprised a single range of two bays, later extended by one bay at each end, and by an outshut at the rear. The central two bays are two storeys high and were originally jettied at the east end. There are three modern casement windows on the first floor. A chimney stack and bay were added to the east end in the late 17th century, featuring a single storey and attic. Modern casements are present there. The current entry point is to the east bay. An extension at the west end appears to be from the late 18th or early 19th century, and is likely the date of the chimney stack in that section. The interior of the original 16th-century section displays a crown post roof with two-way bracing to the collar purlin and a single downward brace to the tie-beam, with the ceiling framing exposed.
