Description

Norfolk House is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century for its crosswing and the 17th century for its main range. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered and has a reed thatched roof. The main range includes a 17th-century red brick ridge stack, along with an inserted ridge stack in the crosswing, also from the 17th century. The crosswing is two storeys high and has a jettied first floor supported by shaped brackets, with exposed first floor flaming made of closely set studwork. It consists of three bays and likely includes a solar wing typical of a hall house. There is one modern window on each storey at the gable end, but a long shutter groove in the wall plate of the north wall suggests the location of an earlier window. The east wall shows traces of a two-light window with a diamond mullion.

The main range is two storeys tall with an attic and features two dormers. It has two hung sash windows on the first floor and two ground floor windows, including a 17th-century horizontal sliding sash on either side of the doorway leading to a baffle-entry. Inside, the crosswing has joists laid flat, and the chimney stack was inserted into this wing. Both the ground floor and first floor were originally one room each. The crosswing has cambered tiebeams with shallow bracing and a chamfered crownpost that is unbraced. The main range is arranged in three bays and features stop-chamfered axial beams and joists.
