Description
No. 98 South Green is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations made in 1784. Originally timber framed, much of the frame has been replaced or covered with brick. The cottage features a reed thatch roof with a parapet at the right-hand gable end and a ridge stack. The original layout consisted of three bays with a lobby entry, although the left bay has been demolished. There is a kitchen wing at the rear, and the building is one storey with an attic.
The front has two segmental arches from around 1784, each containing 20th-century windows, positioned on either side of a doorway that is also in a similar arch. The timber framing is still visible at the rear on the left side.
Inside, there are abutting hearths, one of which has an inglenook and a 19th-century mantel. One room features a corner cupboard from 1784, which has a dentil cornice, raised and fielded panelling, and shaped shelving. The other room has similar panelling on one wall, also with a dentil cornice, and two doorways: one leading to a cupboard with shaped shelving and the other to the lobby entry. These doorways are located on either side of the fireplace, which is flanked by fluted pilasters and features a cornice with a keyblock, a narrow mantel, and panelling around the fireplace and a single panel above it. There is a brick inscribed with "1784" on the chimney breast at the first floor, though it is currently obscured. In the rear wing on the first floor, there are some 18th-century vertical panelling and reset 18th-century balusters in the staircase.
