Description
No. 53 High Street is a cottage dating from around 1550, with additions and alterations from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and rendered, with a casing of gault brick and a steeply pitched tiled roof featuring a ridge stack. The building has a plan of three bays and a lobby entry, standing two storeys tall. Each storey has three recessed windows, and there is a doorway in a 20th-century brick porch opposite the stack.
Inside, the timber framing is exposed, showcasing close set studding and curved downward bracing. The partition wall between the service end and the hall has been retained and features an original doorway lintel. Another doorway lintel in the front wall likely led to a cross passage, indicating that the original entry to the cottage was at the low end of the hall, with the lobby entry being a later addition. There is a shutter groove in the center room's front wall. The red brick of the inglenook hearth dates from the late 17th century and likely replaces an earlier chimney stack, which may have been framed. The roof was raised at the same time the stack was rebuilt, with the later framing made of light scantling and long, straight bracing.
