Description
The war memorial in Harston is a stone structure erected in 1920, designed by Sir W. Graham Greene and built by C. Jude, with the masonry work done by Messrs Rattee and Kett Ltd. It stands free within a small, informal rose garden. The memorial features a tapering, chamfered shaft on a square plinth, topped with a stepped base. Above the shaft is an undecorated cross with a carved wreath. Inscriptions are located on the sides of the plinth and on one side of the base of the shaft. One inscription, in a projecting panel, reads "1939-1945, In Memory of SGT/Pilot Leslie Cater RAFVR, GNR William Richard Horner RA, who gave their lives in the Second World War." Below this, it states, "This Memorial commemorates those who gave up their lives for their Country, The Great War 4 AUG 1914 to 11 Nov 1918." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other sides of the plinth. This memorial serves as an important reminder of the significant events of the two world wars and is a distinct tribute to those who lost their lives.
