Description
The Old Bakehouse is a cottage that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, although it has been significantly altered in the 19th century. Originally a bakehouse with a shop on the right side, it features a timber frame and plaster, though parts of the framing have been replaced with brick. The cottage has a steeply pitched roof that was originally thatched but is now covered with buff pantiles and has a small 19th-century gault brick ridge stack.
It has a three-bay plan with a lobby entry and is one storey high with an attic, which includes one 19th-century dormer. The windows, dating from the 19th or 20th century, include a hung sash with four panes. Inside, some of the framing on the rear wall is exposed, and the ceiling in the center bay dates from the mid-16th century or early 17th century, featuring unmoulded joists laid flat. The roof remains largely intact, especially over the center and left-hand bays, with well-crafted rafters of uniform scantling. The listing includes the roof and floor frame of the center bay.
