Post Office

The building at 25 Magdalene Street, known as the Post Office, dates from the early 17th century. It is a three-storey structure that is timber-framed and plastered, with some exposed timbers. Both the first and second storeys project outwards. The ground floor features a carriageway on the left side, which has old panelled gates. On the first floor, there are two semi-hexagonal oriel windows, while the second floor has two sash windows, all of which include glazing bars.

At the right end of the ground floor, there is a post with a tapering pilaster topped by a grotesque figure that supports the projecting upper storey. A similar grotesque figure is located to the right of the carriageway. The first floor has tapering Ionic pilasters on the end and middle posts, which also support grotesque figures beneath the projecting second floor. Remnants of end posts can be seen on the top floor. The building retains some original internal features. It is part of a group that includes Nos 13 to 18 and Nos 20 to 31 on the same street.
