Description

The Old School House and former School, originally a National School and Schoolhouse, is now used for commercial and domestic purposes. A date plaque on the building reads "Marston and Lidlington School. 1847" and features the inscription "Fear God." The structure was designed by J.T. Wing of Bedford and is constructed of red and yellow chequered brick with slate roofs.

The building consists of a single-storey L-plan school and a two-storey schoolhouse block set at right angles at the southwest end. The school features a central four-light window in a slightly projecting bay, topped by a small gable. This is flanked by two three-light windows, also in slightly projecting bays. All three windows have timber mullions and transoms, cast iron honeycomb glazing, and are set under gauged brick flat heads. The rear elevation includes one similar window, while the rear wing has plain windows.

The schoolhouse has a gable facing the road with a full-height central projecting bay that features a moulded stone cornice between the floors. The ground floor has a mullion and transom window, and the first floor has a two-light mullioned window, both with the same honeycomb glazing as the school. The southwest elevation includes two windows of a similar style and three blind windows. A central multiple ridge stack of brick is present, and all roofs have deep eaves and verges.
