Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, dating from the 18th century, with significant alterations and extensions made in the 19th century. A plaque indicates it was rebuilt in 1884 by J.S. Wood, the rector. The building features a variety of red brick, with the 18th-century section having a chequered pattern with vitrified headers. The earliest part may include timber framing, as seen in the southeast gable, which is rendered with a substantial clunch plinth. The roofs are covered with clay tiles, and the building has a complex layout. The oldest section is located to the northeast, while the 18th-century part connects to the southwest, and the 19th-century addition wraps around the southwest and northwest sides, creating an overall rectangular plan. The 18th-century section has two storeys and attics, while the other parts are two storeys high. There is a variety of windows, mostly sash windows with glazing bars. The northeast elevation of the 18th-century part has a blocked central doorway. Additionally, this section features a 20th-century two-storeyed canted bay on the southeast elevation. To the right of this bay, there is a doorway with a six-fielded-panel door topped by a rectangular fanlight with ornamental glazing bars, framed by a simply moulded surround and a flat hood. Inside, the staircase retains turned balusters, and the kitchen fireplace in the 19th-century section has three curious moulded heads, which may have been reset from another location.
