Description

Nos 9 to 12 on Dowles Road are four houses built in the mid-18th century, with some alterations from the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The houses are constructed of brick and feature a hipped tile and felt roof. The layout is L-shaped, with the limb extending to the south containing numbers 10, 11, and 12, while number 9 is located in the limb extending to the west.

The east front of the houses is two storeys high with an attic, which is illuminated by five gabled dormers. A dog tooth brick cornice runs along the top. The arrangement of windows consists of three for number 12, three for number 11, and one for number 10 on the upper floor, featuring timber cross-windows with segmental heads. The central window in each group of three is a single-light casement under a segmental head. On the ground floor, there are two windows for number 12, two for number 11, and one for number 10, with entrances centrally located in each section. Number 12 has a lean-to tiled canopy, a wooden architrave with a two-pane overlight, and a 20th-century ledged and boarded door. Number 11 features a wooden architrave and previously had a triangular canopy on wooden brackets. Number 10 has its entrance at the right-hand corner with a wooden architrave and had a triangular canopy. The entrance to number 9 is located on the right return front. At the time of the survey in June 1985, numbers 9 to 11 were unoccupied, and all openings were boarded up.
