Description
No. 44 Load Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and incorporates some elements of 17th-century framing, with alterations made in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick and partly clad with planted framing, topped with a hipped tile roof and featuring a gable end stack.
It stands three storeys high and has a dentilled brick cornice. The front has two windows on the upper floors: the first floor features 16-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 8-pane horizontally sliding sashes. The ground floor showcases a dentilled wooden cornice supported by brackets above a central plate glass shop front, which includes a 4-pane overlight. There are entrances at each corner, each with an overlight and a glazed door.
Inside, there are several exposed beams on the ground floor, likely dating from the 17th century. The building is included in the listing for its group value.
