Description
No. 50 Toll Gavel is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations over time. The building is constructed of painted brick with painted stone dressings and features a slate roof. It has two bays and stands three storeys tall.
The shop front, which is from the 20th century, is set within a 19th-century plastered surround that includes a dentilled cornice. Above the shop front, there are two late 19th-century canted bay windows. These windows have plate glass sashes surrounded by plastered frames, with panelled aprons, projecting sills, and entablatures topped with moulded cornices.
The original stone band on the first floor is interrupted by the late bays. The second floor features a similar sill band and has two 16-pane sash windows, which are set beneath flat brick arches. The building also has paired wooden eaves brackets and end stacks. It is included for its group value with other nearby structures.
