Description
No 44 Toll Gavel is a building from the first half of the 18th century. It has two storeys made of painted brick and features an original plain tile roof along with an early 19th-century eaves cornice. The façade includes five sash windows with glazing bars. A notable feature is the pharmacists' shop front, dating from around 1830, which has two projecting shop windows with panelled bases and bands of vertical needing above. At each end of the front, there are semi-elliptical elongated Doric columns attached to pedestals. Flanking the modern centre door are two elongated Doric columns on pedestals, each adorned with metal serpents twining around them. A plain lintel runs across the front, topped by an enriched shelf cornice with plain paterae. Additionally, there is a small plate glass display window inserted in an opening on the north side. This shop front is considered the most interesting of its date in the town.
