Description
This barn, located about 35 yards north-west of Shell Manor, dates back to around 1600. It is constructed with a timber frame set on a plinth of lias limestone rubble and is weatherboarded with a plain tiled roof. The barn features three framed bays arranged in a north-east to south-west alignment, with a central wagon bay that has opposed double doors.
Inside, there are two rows of closely spaced studs extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with swept braces in the lower and upper corners. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses; the truss at the south-west end has closely set studs both above and below the collar, while the north-east end truss features three struts to the collar and a central strut above. The intermediate trusses are arch-braced and also have a central strut to the collar. Additionally, there are some swept and some straight wind-braces, and owl holes can be found in the gable ends.
