Description
Shell Mill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century, with remodeling in the late 19th century and further alterations in the mid-20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing with brick infill and brick construction, topped with plain tiled roofs. It consists of three framed bays aligned north to south and has an external sandstone ashlar chimney with a pair of star-shaped stacks on the east elevation. An L-shaped range adjoins the west elevation. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice in parts.
On the west elevation and its north return, there are two rows of closely set vertical studding. The north gable end displays a collar and tie-beam truss with closely set vertical studs. The east elevation has a large 20th-century three-light casement window on the ground floor, alongside a blocked window to the left of the chimney. The first floor features three three-light 19th-century casements and two ledged and battened doors with sidelights. The main entrance is located in a lean-to addition on the west elevation.
Inside, the southeast bay of the older section contains a large fireplace with a massive stone lintel, similar to those found at Shell Manor. There is also some 17th-century panelling with a frieze, and the main beams are stop-chamfered. Originally, the older part of the farmhouse included a southwest wing and an external chimney with two star-shaped stacks, which were enclosed during the 19th-century remodeling. It is said that the southwest wing retains part of a cruck truss, suggesting that the house may have even older origins.
