Description

Salwarpe Court Barn, located about 100 yards south-east of Salwarpe Court, is a barn dating from the 16th century, with an extension likely added in the late 18th century and significant alterations made in the late 20th century. The barn is timber-framed, standing on a sandstone rubble plinth, and is weatherboarded with a plain tiled roof. It features six framed bays aligned on a north-west to south-east axis. The fourth bay from the north-west gable end includes a wagon bay, with a gabled porch on the south-west elevation and opposed square-headed cart entries. To the left of the porch is an outshut with a catslide roof. Originally, the barn likely had seven bays, but the south-east bay was replaced by an addition of three framed bays, which are slightly lower in height and include a central wagon bay with opposed square-headed cart entries.

The main part of the barn has two rows of closely spaced vertical studding, with some swept and straight braces in the upper corners, arch-braced collar-and-tie-beam trusses, large swept wind-braces, and a single row of purlins. The later addition features long rectangular panels from sill to wall-plate with long straight braces across the lower corners. Its roof includes a collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts at the south-east gable end, two intermediate king post trusses of a later date, and a single row of trenched purlins. A weathervane is located at the north-west gable end. At the time of the survey in November 1984, the barns were in the process of being converted into two houses, although most of the original frame was being retained.
