Description
SO 86 SE SALWARPE CP SALWARPE
4/236 Salwarpe Court Barn about 100 yards south- - east of Salwarpe Court
GV II
Barn. C16, extended probably late C18, with major late C20 alterations. Timber-framed on sandstone rubble plinth, weatherboarded with plain tiled roof. Six framed bays on north-west/south-east axis; wagon bay fourth from north-west gable end, with gabled porch to south-west elevation and opposed square-headed cart entries; to the left of the porch is an outshut beneath a catslide roof. The barn was probably of seven bays originally, the south-east bay of which was replaced by an addition of three framed bays, slightly lower in height and with a central wagon bay and opposed square-headed cart entries. Framing: main part has two rows of close-set vertical studding, some swept and straight braces in the upper corners, arch-braced collar-and-tie-beam trusses, large swept wind-braces and a single row of purlins. The later part has long rectangular panels from sill to wall-plate with long straight braces across the lower corners; the roof has a collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts at the south- east gable end, two intermediate king post trusses of later date and a single row of trenched purlins. There is a weathervane at the north-west gable end. The barns were undergoing conversion to two houses at the time they were surveyed (November 1984) but most of the frame was being retained.
