Description
This barn, likely dating from the 16th century or earlier, is located on the west side of Church Lane in Winterbourne, part of Court Farm. It is constructed of rubble with pantile roofs and small stone slates at the eaves. The walls are battered and vary in thickness, topped by a steeply pitched roof. A gabled north entry was likely added later, and there are slit vents and pigeon holes, although the latter are now obscured by a west-side extension. A parallel range was built in the mid-19th century, attached to the south. A lower extension to the west, also from the mid-19th century, features double doors set under relieving arches.
Inside, the barn has seven bays with pairs of raised full crucks springing from the middle of the side walls. Braced collars, and saddles to a flat base ridge are present; one saddle supports a short post which takes the ridge. The ridge form may be rare, exhibiting a triangular shape. Several wind braces of heavy timbers are also still visible.
