Description
The Hambrook War Memorial is a war memorial built in the interwar period, made from pennant stone. It features a freestanding Celtic cross that stands on a three-stepped base. The cross is topped with a tapered plinth and shaft. The sides of the plinth and the top step are inscribed with various dedications. On the west face, it reads: "IN MEMORIAM TO THE GLORY OF GOD THIS CROSS IS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE CIVIL PARISH OF WINTERBOURNE AND DEDICATED IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE TO OUR MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 AND WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED HEREON 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS' JOHN.15.13 1939 - 1945 AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The south face lists names from Frenchay, the east face lists names from Winterbourne Down, and the north face lists names from Winterbourne.
