Description
This is a late 17th-century building situated overlooking the River Frome. It is a three-storey structure, rendered on the exterior, with a pantile roof and chimneys featuring diagonal stacks, some of which have been replaced. The building comprises three ranges of windows, primarily casements. Many of these windows are ovolo-mullion type, with two of three lights serving The Laurels and one of two lights serving Marigold Court. The Laurels has a small two-light window on the first floor, presumably serving the staircase, and a ground-floor lean-to. A further lean-to is on the right, containing a first-floor window and a ground-floor entrance door. At the rear, there are small two-light casements located below the eaves.
The interior of The Laurels includes an inglenook fireplace. Marigold Court features an impressive strapwork fireplace in the east ground floor room, dated 1675 and attributed to Jonathan Tucker, with a bolection surround decorated with a fruit and flower border and strapwork. A through passage originally served as the entrance, leading to a hall with a mid-17th century moulded beam cornice and a simple corner pattern in the ceiling, with a griffin-like bird motif flanking the centre beam; a fireplace has been removed from this space.
