Description
Foster's Green Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. It features a timber frame set on a sandstone rubble base, with painted brick infill and replacement walling, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building has three framed bays arranged in a south-west to north-east alignment, with an external chimney located at the south-west gable end that has a detached stack. The cottage is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses at the gable end, supported by two struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex at the south-west end. On the north-west front elevation, the ground floor has a 2-light and a 3-light casement window, along with two gabled dormers that each have 2-light casements. The main entrance is located in the left bay and features a ledged and battened door.
The chimney at the south-west gable end is enclosed within a single-storey, hipped-roofed mid-19th century addition that has a dentilled eaves cornice. This addition includes an entrance lobby with doors on each side and the chimney at the south-west end. The interior has not been inspected. At the time of the survey in January 1985, a large late 20th-century addition was under construction at the rear, on the north-east side of the building.
