Description

This outbuilding, located about 10 yards south of Pipstyle House, features a cider mill and is now used as a store. It dates from the late 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is part timber-framed with rendered infill, some weatherboarding, and sections of sandstone rubble and brick walling. It has a tall sandstone rubble plinth, a plain tiled roof, and a brick stack at the rear.

The building consists of two framed bays and is two storeys high. The framing includes a lower row of closely spaced vertical studs with two upper rows of square panels, supported by tie-beam trusses with two collars and queen struts. The east elevation, which faces the road, features a five-light, ovolo moulded wood mullioned window and a square light on the first floor. The north gable end, which faces the house, has a four-light, ovolo moulded wood mullioned window and a loft door. The south gable end includes a first-floor door and a rectangular opening in the gable. At the rear, on the west side, there is an outshut.

Inside, the roof has been partly renewed and includes two rows of trenched purlins along with an intermediate collar-and-tie-beam truss. The cider mill is located in the south bay, while the north bay was once used as a wash house and contains a boiler and hearth.
