Description

Chestons Cottage is a row of three cottages, now combined into a single house, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with rendered infill panels, some replacement brick walling, and a plain tiled roof. A rebuilt external stack is located on the left side elevation. Originally a range of three or four bays, only two bays survive. The cottage is single-storey with an attic, featuring dormers. The timber framing uses mainly three square panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners of the front left bay. A truncated collar- and-tie-beam truss is exposed in the gable end facing the road. The front elevation includes two 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and an extension to the roof forming a catslide porch above a 20th-century door. There is a 3-light casement window and an attic light in the gable end facing the road. The interior was not inspected. A two-storey extension adjoins the rear gable end, forming an L-shaped plan.
