Description

Linden Lea is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill and some brick replacement walling. The left gable end is partly rendered, and there is a high sandstone rubble plinth. The roof is plain tiled, and there is an external sandstone chimney on the left gable end with paired diagonal brick stacks, as well as a brick stack to the front right of the ridge. The house has three framed bays and is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers and a cellar.

The framing is irregular, consisting of two panels from sill to wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners and collar-and-tie-beam trusses in the gable ends. On the front elevation, all windows are from the 20th century, including two 3-light and two 2-light casements on the ground floor, along with two gabled dormers featuring 2-light casements. There is a small central door leading into the cellar and the main entrance at the rear centre has a 20th-century plank and battened door.

Inside, there are intermediate collar-and-tie-beam trusses and a single row of trenched purlins, one of which has been replaced. The main beams are stop-chamfered, and a winder staircase is retained in the central bay. A single-storey addition has been built onto the left gable end to enclose the external chimney, which contains back-to-back inglenook fireplaces and a bread oven. A 20th-century wing has been added to the front of this addition, along with a hipped-roofed single-storey extension at the right gable end.
