Description
Baytree House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It likely originated in the 16th century and was enlarged in the 17th century, with further alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, a sandstone rubble plinth, and a plain tile roof. There are external brick stacks with offsets located at the rear center and at the left gable end.
The house has a U-shaped plan, consisting of a main range with four framed bays, which includes a former through-passage bay. There is a framed bay at the rear right end and a rebuilt brick bay at the rear left end. The building is one storey with an attic that has dormers and also includes a cellar. The framing consists of three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, short straight braces in the upper corners, and tie-beam trusses with two collars, queen struts, and V-struts in the apex.
On the front elevation, there are three gabled dormers and four windows on the ground floor, which include two 3-light and two 2-light casements with plank weatherings. The previous entrance, located in a narrow bay second from the left, is now blocked and has an inserted 2-light casement. The current main entrance is found in the left side elevation of the rear brick bay, accessed through a 20th-century door. Inside, the main beam is stop-chamfered, and there is a large sandstone inglenook in the 'hall' bay. The rear timber-framed bay has irregular framing and is two storeys with an attic, suggesting it may be of an earlier date.
