Description

Uphamton Cottage is a house that was originally divided into cottages and is now a single dwelling. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and restoration completed in the late 20th century. The cottage is timber-framed, with some parts repaired and replaced with rendered infill, and features a plain tiled roof with two star-shaped brick chimney stacks on the main ridge.

The structure consists of four framed bays, including a chimney bay, and has a single storey with an attic that includes dormers and a cellar. The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and V-struts in the apex.

On the front elevation, all doors and windows are from the 20th century, featuring three 2-light casements, a rectangular light, a 2-light casement on the stair landing just below the eaves, and a pair of 2-light casements. There are four gabled dormers, each with 2-light casements. The entrances are located at the centre and left end bay, both with lean-to porches; the left porch is supported on brackets while the right one is supported on uprights. The attic lights are found in the gable ends.

Inside, the roof at the right end includes some 19th-century timber, including a board ridge, two rows of trenched purlins, and intermediate collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts. There are back-to-back inglenook fireplaces and a winder staircase located at the rear of the chimney. The cellar is beneath the right end bay and is accessed through the floor. Additionally, there is a 20th-century lean-to brick extension at the left gable end.
