Description

The Gables is a house dating probably from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infill panels, a sandstone rubble plinth, replacement brick walling, and a plain tiled roof. The house has paired star-shaped brick ridge stacks. The building has four framed bays, including a through-passage bay that has been altered to create a lobby-entry plan with an inserted stack. It comprises a single storey and an attic with dormers. The timber framing is irregular, with two and three panels from sill to wall-plate. The lower panels are narrow and rectangular, and there are short straight braces in the upper corners. The roof structure features collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts. The front elevation has two cross-casement windows and a three-light casement, all with plank weatherings on the ground floor. Three gabled dormers contain two-light casements. A 20th-century gabled brick porch with a ledged and battened door has been added. An outshut constructed from brick is located at the rear. The interior was not inspected.
