Description

Coombe Cottage, Mercia Cottage, Number 3, and Abbots Retreat form a cottage row dating to the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, built upon a stone plinth, and has a thatched roof. It likely originally comprised seven framed bays, featuring stacks at the junctions. The property has one storey with an attic space lit by four eyebrow dormers. The ground floor has a mix of 1 + 3 + 2 + 2 casement windows, predominantly 2-light casements from the 20th century. Entrance doors are modern, ledged and boarded. Abbots Retreat and Mercia Cottage have had garage doors inserted. The timber framing is of elm, constructed in three square panels. The Ordnance Survey records Abbots Retreat as "Sarnia."
