Description

Longthatch is a house dating from the 14th or 15th century, which was remodeled in the 17th century and extended in the early 19th century. It features cruck framing, although much of the timber framing has been replaced by early 19th-century colorwashed brick and coursed limestone rubble. The roof is gabled and thatched, with brick stacks at the ridge and ends. Originally a medieval hall house, it was remodeled in the 17th century to create a three-unit house with a lobby entry to the right of center. The building has one storey and an attic, with a four-window range. A pentice hood covers a late 20th-century door, which is separated by a timber lintel from an early 19th-century four-pane casement. There is also a doorway to the right that was blocked in the early 20th century. The windows are mostly late 20th-century, and there is a two-light casement in the dormer.

Inside, there are two full-cruck trusses on the left, although their apexes have been removed. The cruck on the right has a 17th-century timber-framed partition inserted at ground level. The interior features 17th-century stop-chamfered beams, along with 20th-century joists and a chamfered bressumer over a 17th-century open fireplace in the center. The early 19th-century addition to the right has a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace with a bread oven and softwood rafters in the roof. Much of the medieval structure has been lost, but it is believed to have originally been a hall house with three to four bays. It was converted into two cottages in the early 19th century.
