Description

Sytchampton Endowed School is a school building dated 1826, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped plain tiled roof, with brick end stacks that have tiled offsets. The building stands two storeys high on a brick plinth and has three bays, with clasping pilasters and a central gabled bay that projects slightly. This gabled bay contains a full-height, round-headed arched recess that is flush with the wall face and flanked by pilasters.

All the windows have cambered heads and moulded architraves. The ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes. The central entrance is sheltered by a lean-to brick porch that has clasping, moulded buttresses. The doorway features a cambered head, a dropped keyblock, and a 4-panelled door, with rectangular lights on each side elevation. Above the entrance, set in an arched niche in the gable, is a datestone shaped like a sarcophagus, inscribed with: "AD 1729/ CHARITY SCHOOL HOUSE/ FOUNDED BY RICHARD LLOYD/ OF COMHAMPTON IN/ THIS PARISH/ YEOMAN/ REBUILT 1826". Additionally, there is a Sun Assurance fire insurance mark at the gable apex. The interior was not inspected, and there are single storey rear additions. This school, along with the former schoolhouse in Ombersley Village, was established under the name of Richard Lloyd's Charity, as Richard Lloyd allocated money and lands in his will to create an Educational Trust for the children of the parish whose parents earned less than £5 per year.
