Description

This is a primary school built in the late 18th century, with additions from 1860 and early and late 20th century. The original section resembles a house with a symmetrical front facing south, featuring two storeys and an attic, with two windows. It has a half-hipped roof and a catslide at the rear. The front wall is made of painted brickwork in Flemish bond, with cambered openings on the ground floor and a plinth, while the east wall is rendered. The windows are three-light casements. There is a panelled door, which has a glazed top, set within a plain frame and sheltered by a 19th-century tiled hood on brackets. Above the doorway, there is an oval plaque in a rectangular panel, decorated with winged cherubs, fern leaves, and roses, inscribed with "This Charity School for 24 Poor Children of Hatherden and Wildhern was endowed by James Sambourn, Merchant. Born in Andover 20th October 1725. Dei Donum Des Datum." Above this inscription is a smaller panel featuring a shield with three five-pointed stars. A late 19th-century doorway has been added next to the window on the west side. Attached to the west side of the original building is a hall school from around 1860, likely designed by William White, the architect of the nearby church. This section has a gable and a large front window, with a tile roof, walls made of large flints interspersed with thin horizontal brick bands, brick quoins with angled rustication, and a buttress on the west wall. It also features casement windows. There is an additional hall attached in a set-back position from the early 20th century, which matches the size, form, and materials of the earlier buildings. A separate pre-fabricated classroom was added in the late 20th century.
