Description
The Whitehouse is a house that has been converted into two cottages. It dates back to the 15th century and has been extended and altered in the 17th century and again in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame with brick infill, brick replacement walling, and plain tiled roofs. It has paired brick stacks on the front main ridge and two external sandstone chimneys with detached brick shafts on the right side elevation.
Originally a cruck hall house, it retains three framed bays and three pairs of full crucks, with a single framed bay added to the rear right during the 17th century and a chimney inserted in the central bay. The structure is single storey with an attic that has dormers and a cellar. The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, some long straight braces in the lower corners, and short straight braces in the upper corners of the rear wing. The left gable end features a collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts, while the rest of the building is cruck-framed.
On the front elevation, the ground floor has three 2-light casements with cambered heads, two gabled dormers (one with a 2-light casement and one that is blocked), and an entrance at the right end bay with a part-glazed door that has a cambered head. There is also an attic light in the left gable end and an entrance into the second cottage. A lean-to extension at the right gable end encloses the external chimneys. At the time of the survey in September 1984, the building was uninhabited and in a dilapidated condition.
