Description

Hemmings Farmhouse, now a house, dates back to the late 16th century, and was altered in the mid-19th century and early 20th centuries. The house is timber-framed with brick and rendered wattle-and-daub infill, brick refacing and replacement walling, and has plain tiled roofs. It features paired star-shaped brick stacks on the main ridge and an external brick stack with offsets and a star-shaped shaft with a cogged course at the base to the rear left. The house follows an H-plan, comprising a two-bay hall, an inserted chimney forming a lobby-entry plan in the east bay, a two-bay wing at the east gable end, and a single-bay wing at the west gable end. It is two storeys high. Exposed timber framing is visible at the rear of the house. The hall retains the upper two rows of square panels. The east cross-wing gable end has four square panels from sill to wall-plate and a collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts. The west cross-wing gable end has a similar truss. The front elevation has a 1:2:1 window arrangement. The ground floor of the central part has a 3-light casement and two gabled half-dormers with cross-casements. The main entrance has been moved from its original lobby-entry position to the right of centre, featuring a 6-panelled door with a moulded architrave. 3-light casements are located in the gable ends, with a retained mid-19th century one, featuring a cambered head, on the first floor of the right-hand gable end. Inside, the main beams have stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and there is a cross-beamed ceiling to the front ground floor of the east wing. There are back-to-back inglenook sandstone fireplaces. A 19th-century single-storey kitchen wing adjoins the rear right side of the main house.
