Description

Acton Manor is a house dating from circa 1600, with a mid-20th century restoration. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and has plain tiled roofs. The rear of the house features two large external sandstone stacks, one at the centre and one to the left wing, constructed with paired, star-shaped brick shafts. A further external brick stack is present on the right side elevation. The house follows an H-shaped plan, comprising a two-bay hall with a two-bay cross-wing to the right and a three-bay left wing. The rear bay of the left wing appears to have been partly rebuilt in brick, incorporating a former external stack within the new fabric. The house is two storeys high. The timber framing exhibits four square panels from sill to wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. Internal construction utilizes collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts and V-struts in the apex. The front elevation is punctuated by 20th-century windows and doors. The central section has a large, gabled half-dormer containing a 4-light casement window, and on the ground floor, two 2-light casement windows flank the central door. The gable end of the left cross-wing features three 2-light casement windows on each floor, while the gable end of the right cross-wing incorporates a ground floor 4-light casement window and three first-floor 2-light casement windows. The hall’s interior showcases a cross-beamed ceiling and retains an arched doorhead in the rear wall on the right side, likely from a former through-passageway. This detail suggests the former existence of a corridor running through the building.
