Description
The former barn and granary, located about 27 metres south of Shell Manor, dates from the 17th century with mid-19th century additions. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a plain tiled roof. The structure features six framed bays oriented north-east to south-west, with the third bay from the north-east end serving as a wagon bay that has opposed cart entries and double doors. The main north-west elevation includes four stable doors, one on the left side and three in the two bays to the right.
The framing consists of a wall-frame with long rectangular panels; the north-east bay has three rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, supported by short straight upper braces. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses with struts, and the intermediate trusses are arch-braced, featuring a single tier of trenched purlins. Attached to the north-east gable end is a 19th-century brick granary. The north-west elevation has a stable door on the ground floor, along with blue and red brick steps leading to an upper-level door, and a three-light wood mullioned window on the first floor.
Inside, the roof is supported by two king-post trusses. There is an outshut on the south-west elevation. The buildings form the east side of the former farmyard that is situated in front of Shell Manor.
