Description

This is a shelter shed located about 30 yards north of Middle Farmhouse, likely built in the late 18th century with some alterations from the mid-19th century. The structure is made of limestone rubble and features a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped at the west end. It consists of eleven bays arranged east to west, with the south side open and supported by timber posts. The fifth and sixth bays include 19th-century brick infill and a square window. The roof is supported by intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The floor is cobbled, and along the rear wall, except in the fifth and sixth bays, there is a continuous timber manger supported by posts on sandstone blocks, which are linked and braced against each tie-beam. In front of the manger is a brick wall about 18 inches high, featuring semi-circular sandstone drinking troughs that project from it at regular intervals. Behind the manger is a narrow feeding passage. This shelter shed is an early and rare complete surviving example of a shelter shed feeding arrangement.
