Description
40 and 41 The Tything are two houses that now function as a shop and a public house, forming part of a terrace. They were refronted in the mid to late 18th century, with earlier elements and later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of painted brick and feature a plain clay tile roof, with tiles also covering the roofs of the dormers. There is a party-wall stack with oversailing detail and pots.
The structures are two storeys tall with attics and have four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The brick detailing includes dentilled eaves and a plain band below the eaves on the left house only. The first-floor windows and the left ground-floor window of 'The Green Man' are 6/6 sashes set in near-flush frames under segmental arches. The left house has a timber shopfront with pilasters, console brackets, and a cornice, featuring a central recessed entrance. The entrance to 'The Green Man' has a six-panel door with an overlight and a plain doorcase topped with a simple canopy on corbel brackets. There are two gable dormers on the left and one on the right house, each with a pair of 2-pane side-hung casements. The interior has not been inspected.
