Description
41A, 42A, and 42 The Tything are three houses that have been converted into shops, forming part of a terrace built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. The left house is painted, while the others are constructed of red brick with stone detailing. They feature a plain clay tile roof with a parapeted curvilinear gable on the right side. The roof and dormers are partially concealed by a high parapet on the facade. There are off-centre left and gable-end stacks, all with oversailing details and pots. The buildings rise three storeys with attics and have six first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2:2 pattern. Stone detailing includes a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, copings on the parapets, and sills. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, set in plain reveals with flat gauged brick arches. The timber shopfronts feature a right-side shop with part-fluted pilasters, console brackets, and a cornice; there is a step leading to a four-panel entrance door with an overlight and a turned mullion for the shop window. Three box-dormers are also present.
Inside, No. 42 retains very little of its original interior, except for an open-well staircase with square balusters and a ramped handrail. Nos. 41A and 42A were not inspected.
