Description
No. 16 The Tything is a terraced house, now used as offices, dating from around 1770 with later additions and alterations. The building features painted stucco over brick and has a plain clay tile roof. To the right, there is a rebuilt stack with oversailing detail and pots. The entrance is marked by a timber doorcase. The gable wall of the rear wing is timber-framed.
The plan is L-shaped with a central entrance and a wing extending to the rear left, and it occupies a wider plot than the adjoining properties, Nos. 15 and 17. The facade is symmetrical, consisting of three storeys and a cellar, with five first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a continuous band above the ground-floor and first-floor windows, along with sills. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, some of which have been renewed, all set in shallow plain reveals with sills. Access to the entrance is via two roll-edged stone steps leading to a six-panel door, framed by a Doric-style doorcase with engaged columns. The interior has not been inspected.
