Description
20 and 21 The Tything are two terraced houses that have been converted into offices. They were originally built around 1810 to 1820, with a refronting of an earlier property and some later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings and feature a hipped plain tile roof that is partially hidden behind a parapet. There is a central stack with an oversailing detail and pots, and the doorcases are lined with wood.
The houses are set on narrow burgage plots, with their main axis running at right angles to the street. The original facade was symmetrical, and the buildings rise three storeys above a cellar. There are four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The stone detailing includes doorcases, a cornice, coping to the parapet, and window sills. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, except for the second floor, which has 3/6 sashes; all windows are set in flush frames with sills and gauged flat brick arches. The pair of first-floor windows on the left are slightly displaced and enlarged.
There are entrances on the left and right sides, with three steps leading to the left entrance and two steps to the right. Each entrance features a six-panel door, with the upper panels raised and fielded, adorned with bolection moulding, while the lower pair of panels are flush-beaded. The doorcases have open pediments supported by console brackets, and the fanlights above the doors have a radial pattern with segmental margin-glazing. The interior has not been inspected.
