Description
Nos. 18 and 19, The Tything are a pair of terraced houses dating back to around 1880, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of brick with stone dressings and have a roof hidden behind a parapet. A stack with decorative bands, a stone cornice, and pots is visible on the left-hand side. They feature a timber shopfront.
The houses were built on narrow burgage plots, with their principal axis set at a right angle to the street. The symmetrical facade is three storeys high and has two windows on the first floor. Stone detailing includes corbels, surrounds to oriel windows, sinuous coping to the bays, coping to the main parapet, a plain band aligned with the head of the first-floor windows and sill of the second-floor windows, and a full width modillion cornice at the head of the second-floor windows. Canted bays are present on the first and second floors. The first-floor windows have mullions and transoms with metal side-hung casements and four-pane transom lights, while the second-floor windows are mullioned with eight-pane metal casements. The later shopfront incorporates panelled pilasters, console brackets, a cornice incorporating a blind, a painted glass fascia, a part-glazed pedestrian door with overlight on the left, and a pair of glazed vehicular doors on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
These houses represent a bold commercial facade of their date and contribute positively to the group value of the surrounding area.
