Description

This building comprises two houses, now shops, forming part of a terrace in The Tything. It dates from the early 19th century, although it is a refronting of an earlier property, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of brick with stone detailing. It has a two-span hipped roof, with ridges running at right angles to the street, and this is concealed behind a tall parapet. A party-wall stack features oversailing courses and pots.

The building is arranged over three storeys and attics, with three first-floor windows. Stone detailing includes coping to the parapet, window sills, and a canted oriel window of around 1870 to the first floor of the right-hand house. The left-hand house has 6/6 sashes to the first and second floors, with replacement side-hung casements to the attic floor, all set in plain reveals with flat gauged brick arches and sills. The right-hand house’s canted oriel window of around 1870 has sidelights. The sash window within the oriel is a 1/1 design, with stepped and radiused upper corners to each light. The surround is formed of part-fluted pilasters, with bases and an entablature in a Doric style. The second floor has a tripartite window (2/2:8/8:2/2) under a flat gauged brick arch. A Diocletian window (1:4:1) is located on the attic floor, also under a brick arch, both set in plain reveals with sills. A 20th-century shopfront is present on the left-hand side of the building, while the right-hand side has a timber shopfront with double consoles featuring fluted decoration. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
