Description

48 and 49 The Tything are two houses that have been converted into shops, forming part of a terrace. They date from the 17th century and were re-fronted in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of painted brick with stone details, and they have a plain clay tile roof, which is raised and hipped on the right side, with tiles also covering the dormer.

The left house has two storeys and attics, while the right house has three storeys. There are five first-floor windows arranged in a 3:2 pattern. Brick detailing includes dentilled eaves and a projecting plain band below the eaves, which is present only on the left house. The stone detailing features incised capped keystones above the right pair of first-floor windows and stone sills. All windows are set in near-flush frames; the three windows on the left are 1/1 sash under segmental brick arches, while the pair on the right are 6/6 sash under flat gauged brick arches. The second-floor window is 8/8 sash. A central dormer on the left house contains a 1/1 sash window.

Timber shopfronts were inserted at the ground floor around 1987. Inside, No. 48 retains some exposed beams and a fine 17th-century staircase on the upper floors, featuring bulbous turned balusters, a heavy handrail, and newel posts with ball finials. No. 49 was not inspected.
