Description
These two houses, now shops at 5, 5A, 6, and 6A The Tything, were built around 1730, with later additions and alterations, including shop fronts dating to the 1880s. The construction is primarily reddish brick, with shop fronts likely of artificial stone and a plain tile roof. The two-storey building features attics and six first-floor windows (arranged as 3:3), with additional rear ranges. The first floor has six-panel, near-flush-frame sash windows with sills and flat arches of gauged brick. The brickwork projects forward above the windows to create a frieze, and there's a modillion eaves band. The attic features four box dormers; two on the right have casement windows, while the others are unglazed. The ground floor incorporates a continuous shop frontage with end and two off-centre pilasters featuring ornamented friezes, 'Gothic' caps and gablets, a continuous moulded frieze, and brattishing. The shop windows retain overlights and lower aprons; three central entrances are flanked by glazed doors, each with an overlight. The interior has not been inspected. Numbers 5, 5A, 6 and 6A form a group with numbers 1, 4 to 7, 51 to 54, and 57 and 58 The Tything, creating a visual approach to listed buildings along Foregate Street.
