Description

57 and 58 The Tything are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops with offices above. They were likely built around 1720, with later additions and alterations, including first-floor windows and a balcony from the early 19th century, and ground-floor shop fronts from the mid-19th century. The buildings are made of reddish brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar quoins, sills, keystones, a frieze, cornice, and copings. They have a concealed roof with a truncated left side and party-wall stacks, along with a wrought- and cast-iron balcony and a timber shop front.

The structure has four storeys and four first-floor windows. The quoins extend from the first floor to the full height of the buildings, and there is a plain frieze and moulded cornice topped by a low coped parapet. The first floor features tall 6/9 sash windows set in plain reveals, along with a continuous balcony adorned with embellished rods and a frieze that includes circle and star motifs. The second floor has 6/6 flush sash windows with sills, while the third floor has 3/3 flush sash windows, all topped with flat arches made of gauged brick and keystones.

On the ground floor, there are two similar shop fronts with plate-glass windows and cylindrical mullions, which are canted into the end entrances, along with renewed glazed doors. The outer and central pairs of panelled pilasters rest on plinths decorated with diamond motifs and caps, and there is a continuous fascia and cornice above. The interior was not inspected.

These buildings, along with Nos 1 and 4 to 7 and Nos 51 to 54, form a group that contributes to the visual approach to listed buildings in Foregate Street.
