Description
53 and 54 The Tything is a pair of houses that have been converted into shops with offices above. They are numbered from right to left, but this description will go from left to right. The buildings were originally constructed in the 18th century but were refronted later, with additional changes made, including shop fronts added between 1836 and 1899 and renovations in the 1980s on the right side. They are built of painted brick with plain tile roofs, and there is a brownish-red brick stack at the rear party wall. The buildings are two storeys high with attics and feature two first-floor windows on the left and one on the right. A modillion cornice crowns the structure.
On the first floor, there are two 1/1 flush sash windows with sills set in cambered arched surrounds, and to the right, there is a replacement multi-pane tripartite window with a wide cambered arch above it. In the attics, there is a skylight on the left and a gabled roof dormer on the right with a casement window. The ground floor has glazed shop fronts with slender mullions on aprons. On the left, the entrance is canted towards the off-centre left and features a renewed glazed door, fascia, and cornice, along with black and white tiling in the entryway. On the right, the entrance is to the left and consists of part-glazed double doors with a fascia supported by corbel brackets.
The buildings at 51 to 54 The Tything, along with 57 and 58, form a group with No. 1 and Nos. 4 to 7, creating a visual approach to the listed buildings on Foregate Street.
