Description
45-47 The Tything is a group of three houses that have been converted into a restaurant and shops, forming part of a terrace. Originally built in the 18th century, they were refronted later, with additional modifications over time. The exterior features painted stucco, red-brick, and painted brick, topped with plain clay tiles, with the left house having a higher ridge line. There are chimney stacks on the ridge and rear roof slope of the right party wall, both with oversailing details and pots.
The buildings are two storeys high with attics and have five first-floor windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. Brick detailing includes dentilled eaves. The windows on the left are 2/2 sashes set in plain reveals, while the centre and right windows are 6/6 sashes in near-flush frames, with a cambered arch over the centre window and sills on the right pair. There are three box-dormers: the centre one has a 3/3 sash, and the left and right dormers feature side-hung casements.
The left house has an altered timber shopfront, while the centre shopfront includes tiled stall risers and panels with some depicting game birds, along with console brackets and a cornice with a blind-box above. The right-hand property has a stucco shopfront with three plain pilasters, a frieze, and a moulded cornice.
Inside, No. 45 retains a staircase on the upper floors with a heavy-section handrail and slender turned balusters, a cast-iron fireplace in the bedroom, and wide floorboards. Nos. 46 and 47 were not inspected.
